On January 8, 2002 at approximately 4:00 pm Dyke A. Coursen gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.  While answering a complaint of a domestic disturbance he along with his partner Dana Tate were both shot and killed.  Dyke Coursen had been employed as a police officer with The LaGrange Police Department for 13 years before becoming a deputy for The Beufort County Sheriffs Office.  Memorials were given both in LaGrange and Beufort County.  Dyke Coursen had been employed in Beufort County for approximately one year.  At his funeral in Beufort County upon the completion of the playing of Taps one last radio transmission was made.
